Stairs and Balcony Safety
Falls is no one cause of non-fatal accidents for toddlers at home. Falls happens from decks and balcony’s, stairs, windows, furniture, but most falls can easily be prevented. Most children are normally just fine walking up and down the stairs even before 3 years of age, but still not quite confident and falls do occur.

Decks, balcony’s and landings on top of stairs are also hazardous areas. Often children for many hours in those areas un-supervised and much older children are still at risk for falling off deck’s and balcony’s.

What Causes Accidents
Children fall down the stairs when no baby gates are in place. Even with a baby gate at the top of stairs installed, children often climb up the stairs from the bottom and find themselves stuck at the top, with the baby gate closed.

Falls from decks, balcony’s and landing areas are typically caused by unusually low railings (the child just rolls over), too much of a gap between banisters (+4 inches) and child "squeezes" through or furniture next to the railing, that allows the child to climb over!

To Prevent Accidents
Simple precautions can make all these areas much safer for the child. Make sure there is only a narrow gap between banisters on decks, balcony’s and landing’s - ideally max 3". Even if the child can not squeeze through the opening entirely, it might still be posibble to get the head or body - or even a foot - stuck! A banister or deck shield can always be installed. This clear, heavy plastic will prevent the child from getting anything through the openings - even toys!

Remove any furniture that can serve as a climbing structure from the side of the railings. When kids play on ralings and decks, it’s important not to have them play with large size toys that can work as a "step ladder" in an attempt to climb over the railing.

Install baby gates on the top and at the bottom of the stairs. The top stairs baby gate needs to be permanently mounted and always install a strong, secure baby gate - ideally metal or wood. Avoid inexpensive plastic baby gates that can not support the weight of a child leaning against them. At the bottom of the stairs a pressure baby gate can be installed. Pressure baby gates are easier to to put up and do not require tools when installing. A walk through pressure baby gate is recommended. Walk Through pressure baby gates are stronger, made out of metal or wood, and has a doorway built in for convenient daily use! For more information on baby gates, various types and how to install, read our Safety Product Guide on baby gates!
